Cisco Catalyst 6500 Virtual Switch System (VSS) takes the virtualisation capabilities of the Catalyst 6500 one step further, by consolidating two physical chassis, into one logical switch. The two chassis are interconnected by an inter-switch connection which extends the switching backplane between the two switches.
VSS at the Access Layer – allows mission-critical, dual-attached devices such as servers to use Etherchannel in order to fully utilise both uplinks, whilst also providing redundancy in case of switch failure.
VSS at the Distribution Layer – enables the removal of STP-blocked links, thus maximising the installed bandwidth, whilst also providing resilience in case of uplink failure.
